DUBLIN SOUTHSIDE CURIAE

Assumpta Curia

A praesidium’s main work is street contact on Grafton Street every Friday evening, where the Divine Mercy image is displayed. The praesidium also organises a monthly Rosary procession with music around the city centre on the last Thursday of the month. The same praesidium brought a crib onto Grafton Street during Advent and Christmas. Curia reunion was held on 16 December and was a great success. A recruitment drive was carried out recently. Curia is planning a Mass for Christian Unity Week.

Gloriosa Curia

Curia has eight (8) attached praesidia and a total membership of forty- six (46). A Film night was held on 1 February in Mount Olivet House. The film was ‘The Call to Fatima’. Curia is promoting First Saturday Devotions

Benedicta Curia

Curia has four (4) senior praesidia and one junior praesidium. The parish priest in Drimnagh is very supportive of the work of the praesidium in the parish. He requested one hundred and fifty (150) Miraculous Medals and leaflets from the praesidium to give to the children in classes preparing for Holy Communion and confirmation. The junior praesidium has nine (9) members and some of the parents of the children also attend the meetings; they organise block rosaries and recruit among their friends. The Acies will be held on 22 March in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Rialto. An Alfie Lambe banner has been placed in front of the railings of Benedicta House and is attracting much attention from passers-by and passing traffic.

Immaculata Curia

Curia has twelve (12) attached praesidia and a total membership of forty- two (42). The Curia Reunion was held in December and Mass for the cause of now Servant of God Alfie Lambe is being organised for February. Curia recruitment will be organised monthly. The title of the last Patricians’ meeting was ‘New Year Resolutions.’ The attendance was seven (7) legionaries and three (3) Patricians. The title of the next paper is ‘Lourdes’. On Wednesdays during May and October the Rosary was prayed at the Statue of Our Lady on Walkinstown Avenue. The praesidium delivers forty- five (45) Maria Legionis journals per quarter.

Ancilla Domini Curia

Curia members have recently undertaken the 33-day Consecration to Jesus, through Mary using St. Louis Marie de Montfort’s book. At the recent officers’ meeting, it was proposed that the Curia hold a Congress later in the year. The junior praesidium is going well. Part of their work is distribution of Miraculous Medals outside Myra House. A Frank Duff Prayer Meeting is held monthly, where a piece of writing by Frank Duff is read and discussed. Curia street contact is held in Temple Bar on Saturdays and is followed by a public rosary. A recruiting drive was held on St Brigid’s Day. Three local churches were visited, starting with Mass at Whitefriars Street. Miraculous Medals were distributed to people leaving the church and recruiting cards offered. Some good contacts were made. Recruiting was also done at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Next Patricians’ meeting is on Saturday 22 February at 11 a.m. in Brandsma Hall. A praesidium’s main works are home visitation and nursing home visitation. Auxiliary members are also visited. Members are hoping to restart the Frank Duff prayer group which ran for twenty (20) years before covid and are also investigating the possibility of running a Bible Study group in the parish centre.

Annunciata Curia

Unfortunately, Our Lady Queen of Peace praesidium in Churchtown has needed closure for now by the Curia. This praesidium has been struggling for some years with only two (2) members who have now transferred to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal praesidium in Clonskeagh. Curia currently has five (5) attached praesidia and a total membership of thirty- two (32). At the last Curia meeting an update and progress report was taken from all praesidia. In an effort to do something special for the Jubilee year, the following suggestions were made: -pointing out to those met on contact work that this is a special Jubilee year and the main message is Hope, - letting people know that Jesus Himself said “without Me you can do nothing”, -organising and holding a retreat for the visually impaired people in the Curia area, - organising for monthly Eucharistic Adoration in the Legion house.

The Curia has since received permission for monthly Eucharistic Adoration in the Legion of Mary house with the main focus of the Adoration being on promoting vocations to the religious life. Monthly Saturday morning recruiting in the Rathmines area has restarted. A very enjoyable Curia reunion was held on the 14 December with an attendance of thirty (30) active and auxiliary members.

Mater Ecclesiae Curia

The Curia’s priority is strengthening the existing praesidia through recruitment of new members and filling of officer vacancies. Recruitment is carried out on street contact in both Bray and Dún Laoghaire on Saturday mornings. One or two pairs go out in each location on most Saturdays. A Holy hour during which the Frank Duff prayer is prayed takes place every Thursday in St. Joseph’s, Glasthule from 11 a.m.- 12 p.m. and every second Thursday in the Chapel of Divine Masters, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet are prayed along with the prayer for the Beatification of the servant of God, Frank Duff. Several praesidia in the Curia take turns at praying the Rosary and the prayer for the Beatification of Venerable Edel Quinn before the 10 a.m. Mass on Mondays in St. Patrick’s Church, Monkstown. Recent Patricians’ titles were ‘Lumen Gentium’ and ‘St Bernadette- an instrument of Humility.’ Flyers for Deus et Patria events and Mary’s Channel of Grace are distributed on contact work. A praesidium delivers one hundred (100) Maria Legionis journals every quarter. The Acies will be held Sunday 23 March and Curia Congress on 29 March. All members were encouraged to save the date for the ‘Call to Arms Conference’ for Dublin legionaries on 1 March.

RWANDA

Senatus of Kigali

After the installation of the new Regia of Ginkongoro in May 2024, the installation of the Regia of Nyundo took place last October, of which the details will be mentioned in minutes to come. This new Regia will be combining the Diocese of Ruhengeri and Nyundo as agreed by Concilium. It is great to see the high number of junior and intermediate praesidia that are in the minutes, for example Comitium Nyundo has four (4) secondary school and forty- two (42) primary school praesidia with a total of over eight hundred (800) children, and Comitium Kibuye with similar numbers. The various Curiae have similarly impressive numbers. Their works include home, hospital, auxiliary and prison visitation as well as making contact with lapsed Catholics. One new Curia was set up. As the various Regia and Comitia have high numbers of legionaries, subdividing might be an important next step for the Senatus to consider.

Some Handbook Reflections

We are looking this month at the second of a four- part series about Standing Instruction from p. 11 and 12 in Some Handbook Reflections:

STANDING INSTRUCTION (Second Part)

“Legionary duty requires from each legionary:-

... Second, the daily recitation of the Catena”(Handbook 18:7)

“BASIC DUTIES OF LEGIONARIES…6 THE DAILY RECITATION BY EACH LEGIONARY OF THE CATENA LEGIONIS (CHAIN OF THE LEGION) composed principally of the Magnificat, Mary’s own prayer, the evening hymn of the Church, “the most humble and grateful, the most sublime and exalted of all the Canticles” (St Louis-Marie de Montfort) As the name implies, this is the link between the Legion and the daily life of all its members, active and auxiliary, and the bond which unites them one to another and to their Blessed Mother. The name is suggestive, too, of the obligation of daily recitation. Let the idea of a chain, composed of links - each link vital to perfection - be to each legionary an admonition against forming a broken link in the Legion’s chain of daily prayer. Legionaries whom circumstances have forced to relinquish active membership (and even those whom less weighty reasons have caused to forsake the ranks) should still keep up this beautiful practice and preserve at least this bond with the Legion unbroken during life” (Handbook 33:6)

“I lay special stress on the Magnificat because it seems to me that it may be considered, in a way perhaps not commonly realised, a document of outstanding importance in its bearing on Mary’s Motherhood of grace. The most holy Virgin, identified with Christ as we know her to have been from the moment of the Annunciation, proclaims herself the representative of the entire human race, intimately associated with ‘all generations’ and bound up with the destinies of those who are truly her own. This canticle of hers is the song of her spiritual maternity.” (Bernard,O.P. :Le Mystere de Marie)” (Handbook 18:10)

“The Magnificat is Mary’s prayer par excellence, the song of the Messianic times in which there mingles the joy of the ancient and new Israel. As Saint Irenaeus seems to suggest, it is in Mary’s canticle that there was 11 heard once more the rejoicing of Abraham (cf Jn 8:56) who foresaw the Messiah, and there rang out in prophetic anticipation the voice of the Church ... And in fact Mary’s hymn has spread far and wide and has become the prayer of the whole Church in all ages” (Marialis Cultus 18)” (Handbook 18:10)

“THE LEGION PICTURE ... 2. The picture is a most complete, in fact an astonishing showing forth of the devotional outlook of the Legion. 3. The legionary prayers are made visible ... 4. The Catena is represented as to its name by the chain border ... Truly befitting the antiphon is the portrayal of Mary, coming forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in battle array. On her brow she bears a brilliant star, to mark her who is the true Morning Star, bathed from the first in the beams of redeeming grace and heralding the dawn of salvation. The Magnificat is represented by its opening verse, the ever-present thought of Mary’s mind, appropriately set in letters of fire above her head. The Magnificat sings of the triumph of her humility. It is no less now than then the will of God to depend upon the humble origin of Nazareth for his conquests. By the agency of those united with her, he continues to accomplish great things for his name. The versicle and response are those of the Immaculate Conception, a primary devotion of the Legion, which is expressed in the crushing of the serpent. The words set in the border: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head.” (Gen 3:15) have the same reference. The picture shows this undying warfare: Mary and the serpent; her children and the serpent’s offspring; the Legion and the powers of evil, which fall back scattered in defeat. The Catena prayer is that of Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces, Mother of God and Mother of all men.” (Handbook 25)

33 Day Preparation for Consecration to Jesus through Mary books

As legionaries (active and auxiliaries) are recommended to take on the 33 Day Consecration to Jesus Through Mary proposed by St. Louis- Marie de Montfort during the Jubilee Year 2025- and the suggestions that some councils could perhaps carry it out together with their legionaries over the 33 day preparation period- we remind all of the availability at the very low price of E1.50 per copy of this publication which is modelled on that of St. Louis Marie De Montfort.
