EUROPE A

SPAIN
Madrid Senatus:
Every legionary was so happy and moved by Pope Leo’s visit to Spain. The works the Legion is doing were mentioned in many of Pope Leo’s talks and discourses during his visit. These included works with immigrants, the poor, the marginalised and especially the youth. Many projects mentioned by His Holiness are now projects of the Senatus. Praetorian membership is mentioned in many of the reports read each month. Home to home visitation is done in areas where new families are arriving. New works are being started to reach and attract young adults to the Legion. Most reports mention projects that have commenced. One such project is to keep the church open aimed at attracting people to visit the Blessed Sacrament during the day. This work includes contacting those who come in, many of whom are not practising or even baptised. New praesidia are being started in all of the councils. A new parish priest, who had not known the Legion, was so impressed by the legionaries he has now agreed to be their praesidium spiritual director. ‘Fishing for Youth’ is street contact with young people. Legionaries working in the ‘redlight’ area invited the girls to a special ceremony at Christmas - many came.

Bilbao Senatus:
The senatus held a successful retreat and Mass on May 14th in memory of Edel Quinn. In Santander, the curia does street evangelisation and tries to cope with frequent unreceptive attitudes. A praesidium is heavily involved in parochial work but also supports a young lady who suffers from her nerves. Another praesidium of 5 active members has tried recruiting among churchgoers. The members regularly visit former legionaries, who are comforted in reminiscing about their Legion activities. Finally, several praesidia which are small in number report difficulties in attendance at meetings because of irregular hours of those who are working.

PORTUGAL
Lisbon Senatus:
On the eve of the celebration of the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Sr. Maria Senra entered into her eternal Passover. Senatus members were present at the funeral Mass presided over by Most Rev. Francisco Senra, Archbishop of Evora, a cousin of Maria Senra. When visited in 2024 by correspondents of the Concilium on the occasion of her centenary, Maria said, “I went through many difficulties, but was not afraid; I knew that Our Lady was with me.” Her life continues to be an example and an inspiration for legionaries throughout the world. The senatus in its 2026 planning, recommended that each council prepare its own extension plan and issued a challenge to every praesidium to gain a new praesidium. A praesidium directly attached to the senatus visits the Luanda Residence, which accommodates sick persons from Portuguese-speaking African countries who require medical treatment in Lisbon. The curia of Alcochete gave a presentation on the Legion to a group of young people and also prepared an elderly lady to receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation.

ITALY

FERNS CURIA:
Ferns legionaries attended the Tinahely Show where their stand in the competitions tent got a very positive response from many visitors, even before they got to approach people. People showed great interest in hearing about Frank Duff, the size of the Legion and obtaining Miraculous Medals and Rosary beads. An Exploratio Dominicalis project in Gorey involved 8 members in home visitation and contacts after Masses. The team held a planning meeting, prayed together and discussed the approach and purpose of their visits. One pair met 6 unanswered doors. At the 7th they met a couple who wanted instruction in the Faith, desiring to return to Mass and the Sacraments. It transpired later that they had started attending Mass with their 3-year-old son so legionaries introduced them to Catholic families in the area. Belfast Fleadh Project
Our Deus et Patria team of young adult Legionaries engaged in a 3-day project of evangelisation from 7th to 9th August at the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, Ireland’s annual festival of traditional Irish music, song, and dance. It took place in Belfast this year. This was historically very significant in light of the history of the Troubles in Belfast.

The team of 7 included a priest spiritual director, Fr. Declan Lohan, joined by members of local Belfast praesidia also, which added considerably to our number.

An estimated 1.65 million people attended the Fleadh, and we reached out to as many of those as we could during our time there. Our primary means of outreach was through crowd contact in the city centre, in the vicinity of St. Mary’s Church where we had a stall. We gave thousands of miraculous medals to Fleadh attendees, Catholics, Protestants, some Muslims, those of other religions and none, from all parts of Ireland and further afield and encouraged them towards faith and the church. The reception was in general very good.

We held a special event on the Friday night called 'The Story of Ireland' at which Bishop Alan McGuckian spoke, and those among us who were musicians and singers performed. Such was the interest in this event that the attendance of over 100 people exceeded the capacity of the pastoral centre.

On the Saturday evening, Eucharistic Adoration and drew 393 people in to light a candle for their prayer intention, as music was played. 4 priests were hearing confessions.

The Fleadh Mass, on Sunday, celebrated by the Bishop in the Irish language, in St. Patrick’s Church was full beyond capacity.
